graphite, color pencils, encaustic 9 x 12 paper; 43/4 x 61/2 image © 2011 $200 These marks are drawn directly onto the surface or applied with encaustic paint using a writing tool heated by the flame of a candle. I am captivated by the interaction between the lines. This linear language created through deliberate mark making, sparked by intuition, continues my ongoing investigation of the interdependency of opposites. It is a quest for continuity and an impetus to create balance among antithetical systems such as: stillness and movement, simple and complex, static and vibrant.
Susan J Thompson studied printmaking at The Swain School of Design in New Bedford, Massachusetts, graduating with honors. She relocated to Colorado, Boulder then Steamboat Springs to work as a professional fine art printer. Thompson is an abstract artist who works primarily with encaustic painting and mixed media collage. |
