The pages are constructed from commercial book papers and overpainted with fluid acrylics. The images are cut back to the whites of the original paper. The bottle cap rattle is the “voice” of the mixed stories.

The book’s flag book format juxtaposes the exterior male birds with the interior female-egg-fledgling forms. The duality is continued in the English/Spanish haiku text. The book reflects the rich, fertile nature of cross-border life.

Carolyn Leigh is a painter, book artist and author with studios in Tucson, AZ, USA and Alamos, Sonora, Mexico. She taught Scientific Illustration and Photography at the University of Arizona until she joined her husband, Ron Perry, as a tribal art dealer in Papua New Guinea and Indonesia. She is the author of two books: “Art Dealer in the Last Unknown” and “New Guinea Tribal Art eGuide.” Her work is in private and public collections in North America, Europe and the South Pacific.
