Front side of open book (hung from covers with outside of covers facing forward) is a mixed media drawing with gesso, charcoal and ink on natural Okawara. Back side of book as hung above, is hand cut White Unryu paper collaged to the back side of the Okawara. The images are maps of Baltimore and Miami. The covers are ink dyed mango paper over book board with dyed cotton ribbon ties. Texts are: “The Kiss,” Anne Sexton (inkjet printed) and haiku (hand lettered) by the artist. Tom Virgin is a Miami artist making prints, books and public art in residencies around the country. His work has been shown in the United Kingdom, Japan, Canada, Mexico, and New Zealand, as well as nationally from Portland, Oregon to Key West. His work has been featured in 1,000 Artists’ Books: Exploring the Book as Art, and most recently in Lark’s 500 Handmade Books Volume 2, curated by Julie Chen. |
