Robyn Raines Cedar Bluff, Virginia And On interactive mixed media piece dimensions variable © 2011 $10 each (includes all the items in one tray but not the tray itself) Each tray contains various items & two postcards showing an image of that tray’s contents. The buyer signs one postcard, which says ”My signature verifies that I have purchased the items shown on this card. Furthermore, I will mail the duplicate card describing their whereabouts by September 30, 2011.” Then they take the other self-addressed stamped postcard with the contents & mail it back to me. Then the postcards are cataloged in a handmade book, which documents where my collections find new homes. I explore concepts in many ways and combinations: from books and paper, to textiles, to glass and steel. The book, however, seems to prevail—both as object and idea.
Womans Day paper, fabric dimensions variable © 2011 $250 As long as I can remember, I have been a collector. My love and need for collecting is an inherited trait that I now find to be inspiring. I can hear family saying, “…keep everything together; write everything down; the older you get—the busier and soon the small, but special, details are forgotten…” From that come this fear of forgetting and desire/need to keep something(s) that reminds me of moments. My work captures and accentuates the excessive/obsessive nature of my personality-both as artist and collector. The action of keeping and focus on detail is intensifying.
Chronological mica, paper, thread, dissection pins 60 x 8 inches $600 A book can be appreciated by its color, size, title, or how it looks on a shelf. The viewer changes perception by opening, flipping pages, reading, or carefully studying the book. Different experiences between audience and object are where my interest lies. Each piece invites the viewer to delve deeper and becomes more complex with exploration. The familiarity of found-objects combined with new materials crafted using historically-sound structure is the foundation of my work. Robyn Raines is both a book artist and mixed-media installation artist. Following her span as a Core Fellowship Student at the Penland School of Crafts in Penland, NC, Robyn moved her studio to her native southwest Virginia where she served as Director of the Appalachian Arts Center in Richlands, VA. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Textile Design from Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia, PA. Raines has work published in The Penland Book of Handmade Books and 500 Handmade Books.
