This piece relates to some similar furniture from my childhood home but with a very different sensibility. I wanted for this piece to have a bit of mystery along with a touch of creepiness. A surreal misunderstanding of ones past comes to mind, juxtaposed against the reality of ones true nature was the intent of this piece.

Phrenitiscope #7, The Necklace

The interactive properties of early cinema have had a strong impact on my work over the past six-years. Approaching this body of work from the point of pre-cinema has allowed me to construct visual narratives with greater depth, along with the chance to say much more while using fewer materials in building these narratives. The Necklace was filmed during a Fourth of July party so the guests were the actors in the film, being shot frame by frame, moving a few inches at a time, while looking blankly at the camera. This blank stare is the same that I have seen in malls and shopping districts around the world, the act of mindless consumption leaves people with an interesting, funny and global look across their faces.

Phrenitiscope #17; The only life I had I gave away.

This piece is from the pre-cinema moving picture series, which includes Phrenitiscope #7. The footage of the girl jumping rope was shot at the 2008 DNC in Denver, Colorado in front of the manifest hope pavilion. The remainder of the footage was shot from the window of an Amtrack train while on a trip to Washington D.C. and was, I believe, somewhere in Iowa. This film is about transparency and the idea of being free of a burden in order to see through one’s life. I built this piece on the idea of seeing all the working parts within and the difficulties involved of being unable to hide one’s troubles.
