Our aesthetic appreciation of rocks and Leo’s obsession with languages combined with our book practice to generate this phrase book. The conceit is that natural phenomena, and rocks in particular, constitute a kind of language (with literary-philosophical references to J.L. Borges and John Locke). We imagine that every rock, being a fragment of original geological forms, constitutes a unique linguistic fragment, and deserves an elegant and poetic representation.

Anna and Leo Daedalus are husband-wife multidisciplinary collaborators. They’ve made artist’s books since 1997 under the imprint Disposable Books and, since 2011, Marchland Strand. Anna works primarily in photography while Leo is a polyvalent artist working in writing, video, and performance.
