Heather Doyle-Maier Denver, Colorado
fabric, thread, used girls’ clothes 6⅞ x 7¾ x 1¾ closed; 6⅞ x 14¼ x 1½ © 2011 open edition, inquire about availability Her (un) Doing is a feminist look at the traditional “learn to dress myself” fabric books, exploring the simple tasks involved in dressing a small girl and examining the unstated power structures embedded within such everyday actions. In this work, I reduced the process of getting dressed to a series of encounters with different fasteners – the buttons, zippers and snaps that keep clothing in place on the body. Simultaneously, I looked at getting dressed as not only a functional procedure, but also as the process of being fastened into a gender. Heather Doyle-Maier holds a BFA from Metropolitan State College of Denver in Visual Art. Heather brings her experience as a storyteller-musician, a costume designer and a mother to bear in her work. A member of Edge Gallery in Denver, Heather’s award-winning work has been exhibited locally, regionally and nationally. |
