In Wounds, Twigg tackles the issue of child soldiers; their capture, enforced military service and the resulting trauma. It’s an issue that gets press only every now and then yet at any one time there are thousands of children forced into armies around the world. The overall effect of the interplay between image and text has worked to give the book weight and pace; to fill it with a sense of emotional heaviness, tedium and joylessness which echo the child soldier’s unhappiness and fear of abuse.
