Bridget Elmer Asheville, North Carolina Fibre Libre
Fibre Libre is an artists book that tells the story of a group of people learning about free software while learning to make paper. The story is told in two ways, with the paper forming one narrative and a series of images forming the second. Combining the traditional processes of hand papermaking, letterpress printing and bookbinding with the contemporary processes of coding, digital image-making and desktop publishing, the book serves as an exploration of free software and how its architecture can be enacted and understood through the book form. The book is a hybrid form, combining three volumes of Hedi Kyle’s non-adhesive accordion structure with the pamphlet stitch. Volumes are attached by removable spines and include a total of 60 letterpress printed pages, 16 colors of ink, and 13 versions of collaboratively handmade paper.
