St. Cloud, Minnesota Moby Dick volume 2 or 174,649 times E
bound graphite drawings 9¼ x 6¼ x 1 closed, 9¼ x 12¾ x ½ © 2005-2010 $9000 This is the second of the Moby Dick books, having resumed where the first left off. Herman Melville’s epic novel has been altered by changing all letters to the letter E, thus abstracting the text away from something that is read into something that is seen. This bound suite of drawings does not follow the traditional page layout of left to right, top to bottom but instead follows its own logic. I see it as a collaboration between myself and Melville. The World over Nothing or 1,864 times E intagio 30x22 edition of 6 © 2011 - $900 Here a passage from Moby Dick, one that ponders the monotony and sublime sameness of existence is placed above a blank page spread. In some ways these intaglio plates look more like a book than a book does. I especially like the implication of a hierarchical structure.
photocopies - installation view dimensions variable open edition © 2010 - Price on Request Here Moby Dick volume 2 has been photocopied and its structure exploded. No longer a unique book that is viewed in an intimate way, it has been rendered in a limitless edition and viewed in a very public way. Justin Quinn is an artist living in St. Cloud, Minnesota.
