In my world dogs and birds often travel together. I think they have their own reasons and their own agenda regardless of what humans imagine. Ironic in this case because I’m human and I’m imagining a scenario in which a dog and bird journey to Paris to experience the cuisine.

Papier mache, shellac, acrylic paint, ink, graphite, wood, old stamps, old map.

Air Mail (each sold individually)

Each of these pull-toy style sculptures carries a book in its beak (see above detail for Almost There). The books are filled with stamps of exotic places.

While my work encompasses many media from artist books to fabric collage, over the past six years I have also created an ongoing series of crowns. I think of them as wearable books - they tell a story. Usually that story is autobiographical. Other times the crown becomes an external representation of internal thoughts.

In Connections the yellow string of lights represents the electrical system in my brain. Within this system are storage units for thoughts and memories.

Wire, paper, fabric, thread, acrylic paint, shellac, graphite, book pages, decorative paper, gouache, yarn.

Our past experiences become the seeds from which our present grows. In Memory the passing of one idea fertilizes the next idea. Since I can’t open my head to see inside, I imagine this crown to be an external visual extension of my brain.

Unexpected parings of disparate objects form whimsical compositions in the work of Margaret Couch Cogswell. A storyteller at heart, Cogswell employs simple materials and a low-tech approach to inject a personal quality to her work. She uses humor to disarm the reader even as she delivers thought-provoking subject matter. Her education includes a BA from Rhodes College, study at Rhode Island School of Design, Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts and Penland School of Crafts. After three years as a Resident Artist at Penland, Cogswell recently returned to her home and studio in Asheville, NC.
