Star Spell - a small magical book |

| Limited edition book of 53 copies with both a standard and deluxe version, all signed 4 5/8 x 3 5/8 inches 16 pages 2007 Deluxe edition numbered 1 through 13. Stars on front cover and title page laid with 23K white gold (shown). Includes a hand-painted slipcase. Stars handpainted in iridescent ink on front cover and title page. Handmade french-fold accordion book, printed and bound by the artist. Pages digitally printed on both sides of Zerkall book paper with archival pigment inks. Background reproduced from a watercolor painting, on which the words STAR SPELL were lettered larged in resist, and the paper then painted in layers of watercolor to reveal the words in the twilight sky background. Text lettering reproduced from original calligraphy. Flyleaves of sheer Japanese unryu "cloud dragon paper" with silver and gold flecks. Book is sewn into handpainted paper cover which wraps around, the front flap decorated with a star shape in the form of a fire-invoking pentacle. The last page offers a haiku-like verse on the art of making magic, a reference to the old ways hidden in the nursery rhyme. This book structure can be gently unfolded to see the painting in the background, and to find hidden words on the reverse. | Cari Ferraro has been practicing calligraphy for over thirty years. A dedicated reader and collector of quotes from a young age, she obtained a degree in Literature and Creative Writing from the University of California at Santa Cruz in 1976. Her self-taught calligraphy skills grew through affiliations with calligraphy guilds, and by attending conferences and workshops around the country. Her work has been published in various calligraphy periodicals and books. During her career, her work has ranged from traditional illuminated manuscripts to abstract art. She uses many media in this pursuit, including not only pen and ink, but also watercolor, oil and chalk pastels, colored pencils, acrylic paints, and metallic leaf. Writing tools can range from quills and brushes to popsicle sticks and ruling pens, on surfaces as varied as paper, skin, bark, cloth, and ceramic. Her calligraphic manuscript books are collected by individuals and libraries around the country. Of her artwork she says: “When does word become image? My paintings ‘speak’ with calligraphy, symbols, and color. Texts explore sacred mysteries, the natural world and the human heart. Calligraphic art is a way to express and share the power of language.” | ||
