Kelly Parsell Chicago, Illinois
paper, ribbons, crayon, ink 8¼ x 5¼ x ½ closed; 8¼ x 10½ x ¼ open edition of 100 © 2010 $175 This piece investigates the liminal space between childhood and adulthood by juxtaposing two texts: My Spanish Journal—a child’s text of funny and intimate stories focusing on Spanish vocabulary—and A Lesson in Color—a poem written by the child, now grown, that details her experiences traveling in Mexico. Through examining the culture and colors, she recalls the traumatic event from her childhood (i.e., the erased pages of child’s text). What results is a strange and often disquieting play between the two texts, colors, and realms of girlhood and womanhood. Images and text by the artist. Kelly Parsell is a Chicago-based artist and writer. She received her M.F.A. in Interdisciplinary Book and Paper Arts from Columbia College in 2010. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and can be found in numerous libraries and collections. |
