“I developed this series of typographic compositions using literal translations of Portuguese idiomatic expressions as the unifying theme. Both typography and idioms reside in the narrow region between embellishment and understanding. They can be used to evoke memories and emotions, while often clarifying an idea by making language visible. Each idiom presented in this series has a related English expression with an entirely distinct literal meaning. Through these ‘misplaced’ translations I try to highlight the cultural assumptions embedded in each language.”
