Barbara Brandel Tucson, Arizona Sketchbook
“My thoughts were of gardens and landscapes as I placed each button and stitch. The title, Sketchbook, implies quickly made images. But these abstracted landscapes were made very slowly in a free-form fashion (laborious spontaneity). The floppy, soft pages are covered with recycled buttons, and the stitches were made with common sewing thread. I tend to dream up an artwork, and then have to figure out how to do it. I don’t follow rules or established methods. As a result, my work is often in-between genres.” Non-traditional: flexible velvet pages stitched together on left side, then covered with velvet binding.
