Susan Kapuscinski Gaylord Newburyport, Massachusetts Words for the Journey Indian bagasse paper, bamboo, wire, coconut disc bead, sumi ink, archival marker 11/4 x 81/2 x 31/2 closed, 5 x 15 x 15 open © 2011 - $225 I am a long-time collector of quotes. In high school, to the annoyance of my family (before post-it notes), I would tape quotes inside cabinets and about the house. Quotes were part of what led me to calligraphy in the late 1970s. I took the maxim of the French philosopher Michel de Montaigne: I quote others to better express myself. As I moved from calligraphy to books, I continued to keep my file going. After almost twenty years of wordless books, I was moved to create a book that honored my early love. The structure is a fan book bound with a bamboo piece, a coconut disc bead, and wire. The pages are made from one piece of Indian bagasse paper that was painted with sumi ink brush strokes. The quotations are written in archival marker.
