This is an homage to one of my favorite poems by Agha Shahid Ali. He wrote it as an homage to one of his favorite poets, e.e. cummings, taking his title from cumming’s poem, somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond. A ghazal is an Arabic lyric form where each couplet ends with the same echoing phrase and one’s own most intimate name must be included in the text. I used my own handwriting rather than a font to keep the words close to myself.
My interest in the accordion format lies in its ability to reveal the way the mind forms meaning from layered images. Unfolding and refolding sections of the panels provides an unspoken connection with past and future scenes while the present always hovers as the viewers own invention.
