The poetry of Emily Dickinson has always been an inspiration to me. The concept for the trunk developed when I found a description of the binding method that Emily used for her hundreds of poems. It seemed only natural to create the trunk and include some of her poetry and a miniature replica of a shawl associated with most pictures of Emily. All elements of Emily’s Trunk are hand produced.
The box that serves as the trunk was built layer by layer. It also contains a pamphlet-bound essay that
discusses the layers of meaning in Emily Dickinson’s work as well as her binding methods. A colophon is included in the tray. Text of pamphlet bound essay is written by me with citations for any quoted material.
Carol Erickson has taken classes from several book arts professionals, including Julie Chen, Daniel Kelm, Priscilla Spitler, and Laura Wait. She teaches classes in the Southwest and often participates in collaborative endeavors with other artists.
