Both see and atlantic on the left were drawn during a summer visit to Deer Isle, Maine. Even though I had taken a box of all my usual travel art supplies with me – various papers, watercolor, color pencils and walnut ink – I ended up drawing only in one sketchbook, using my old fountain pen. The resulting drawings reflected the starkness and intensity of the island landscape.

rain is part of a series of tea drawings –literally, drawn with tea – which span several years from beginning to completion. I’d been watching the rain all day, after a long drought, and had walked through the garden before going into the studio. It is one of the few in the series that I changed very little from its early state. More white was added and then the final red. Still, it took me two years to finish.

seven days and then again is part of a series of tea drawings, literally drawn with tea, which span several years from beginning to completion. I finally finished this piece during a period of great transition, when I was stripping down and undoing the endless to do lists of my life. Old lists were collaged into the paintings.

days as they are, days as they will be spans several years from beginning to completion. I drew the circles using a large pure graphite cylinder. Using my body in place of a press, I slowly turned the graphite cylinder again and again. I finally finished this piece during a period of great transition, when I was stripping down and undoing the endless to-do lists in my life. On one piece lists were collaged into the painting, the other shows the absence of those lists.
