I have focused on the sculptural side of the book arts in recent years. For this book, I tinted gold-edged ovals with green and hibiscus teas and sewed them together with a link stitch. The foil tabs on the edges of the pages are inspired by page markers on Medieval books. The exaggerated end bands suggest legs, hence the title.

I am inspired by organic forms. For this book, I stained some of the ovals with hibiscus tea and sprinkled them with walnut ink. The pinked ovals were cut from white vellum and then warped by spritzing with water. Ovals were sewn into an ovoid shape using a link stitch. The end band tapers beyond the edge of the piece curling down to a point. A single pearl is at the opposite end of the end band.

Peggy Johnston graduated from the University of Wyoming with degrees in art and education. Since then she has continued her studies in painting, printing and the book arts. Peggy’s award-winning work is in public and private collections nationally and internationally.
